Hillsdale Shopping Center, in conjunction with ELS and Michael Heacock Architects, implemented the these sustainability measures

  • The North Block is constructed on a previously developed site, reducing impact on the natural environment by utilizing existing infrastructure.
  • The North Block saves 1,172,889 gallons of water per year through high efficiency fixtures and a recycled water system equivalent to the water consumption in 19 homes.
  • All landscaping fountain water uses recycled water generated by on-site water treatment facility.
  • Bio Amp Non Toxic Biological Drain Maintenance system – natural process of keeping drains and pipes clear and clean without use of hazardous chemicals.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

  • Installation of solar panels producing 1.06 million kilowatt hours of clean energy annually, enough to power 73 homes.
  • 5% of parking spaces are reserved for fuel efficient and electric vehicles.
  • Over 75% of construction waste was recycled.
  • Building in this dense urban environment reduces carbon emission by encouraging people to walk instead of drive.

Energy Efficiency

  • New building Automation System monitors electricity, gas and hot water for all tenants.
  • Commissioning AGENT tests and balances of all mechanical and electrical systems ensuring they operate efficiently.
  • All lighting is energy efficient.
  • 98% of wood used in the North Block construction is Forest Stewardship Council Certified, helping ensure forests stay alive for generations to come.
